About Harleen

Harleen is an intellectual property (IP) lawyer and Registered Patent and Trademark Agent who takes a strategic and thoughtful approach to guiding clients across the full spectrum of IP rights. Her experience includes securing and leveraging trademark, patent, industrial design, and copyright protection for a range of clients, from early-stage start-ups seeking seed funding to established $150B+ market-cap multinational companies.

Experience & Perspective

Harleen has worked with businesses at very different stages and across a range of industries. Her experience spans working closely with a team for a top-five global luxury fashion house, counseling clients in health and wellness industries, working on leading banking and finance portfolios, advising on a variety of consumer goods, and helping innovators protect and commercialize their ideas. Across this work, Harleen counsels clients on how to define, protect, and commercialize IP assets integral to their businesses.

Prior to moving from the US, Harleen qualified to practice law in New York and earned a Biomedical Engineering degree. She harnesses these credentials to bring a technically sophisticated and international view to her practice, pragmatically and resourcefully assisting clients in essential global jurisdictions.

Beyond the Practice

Harleen’s enduring curiosity has led her to publish and present on a number of emerging technologies, including AI, web3, digital and virtual assets, and NFTs. She proudly serves as a member of the award-winning AI and Emerging Technologies Committee for the Intellectual Property Owners Association. She is a longstanding author and contributor to Lexis Practice Advisor, a prominent industry resource for trademark practitioners.

Harleen also enjoys sharing what she has learned through teaching, mentoring, and speaking, particularly with founders, students, and innovators. She teaches at the university level, participates in professional and community mentorship initiatives, and speaks on intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and leadership. 

She also dedicates time to select pro bono causes, including The Shoe Project, a platform for immigrant women to share their journeys through artistic performance.

Kajal Dhawan is an articling student with Khanijoun Intellectual Property law. She earned her Juris Doctor from Osgoode Hall Law School and holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto. 

During law school, Kajal served as a Clinic Fellow with Osgoode's IP Innovation Clinic, where she supported entrepreneurs and small businesses on matters involving IP protection and commercialization. Kajal has also gained legal experience working with a technology startup, developing practical understanding of the IP issues and considerations relevant to emerging businesses. 

Through her experiences, Kajal has developed a strong interest in different aspects of Intellectual property law and the ways in which businesses can protect and commercialize their ideas and assets.
